Built as a main venue for the 2012 Summer Olympics, London Stadium continues to host many of the world’s top sporting and entertainment events and is today home to Premier League football club West Ham United.
When upgrading the stadium’s field-of-play lighting to LED technology, facility leaders wanted to enhance the overall stadium experience with advanced special effects. However, it was crucial that any new additions preserve the traditional matchday “feel” that is cherished by West Ham supporters.
Stadium management were familiar with recent special effects installations on which Stadium FX had partnered with Musco Lighting, the supplier of London Stadium’s new field-of play lighting system. The success of projects at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Wembley Stadium, and the Etihad led London Stadium to incorporate state-of-the-art special effects controls and infrastructure into its own upgrade.
Working with Musco, Stadium FX designed, supplied, and installed its Apollo Control System for complete command of the new floodlighting system, which includes coloured RGBW fixtures located throughout the seating bowl. Apollo integrates seamlessly into London Stadium’s IT network and Building Management System to provide virtually unlimited creative control over light shows from a single, intuitive platform.
Since installation, West Ham have dazzled spectators with light shows that Stadium FX can customise on a match-by-match basis. These activations not only synch lights to music and video but also integrate the stadium’s moving spotlights, bubble machines and flamethrowers, elevating supporters’ enthusiasm while preserving the historic feel they expect on matchday.
In November of 2022, Stadium FX provided shows integrating additional temporary coloured fixtures which the club installed to accent London Stadium’s roof structure in celebration of the English Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign. The activation gained significant attention on social media and showed how special effects light shows can be used not only for entertainment, but also for a social cause.

We made St George’s Park the first test cricket ground in the world to operate an LED floodlight system, and the first to receive our Apollo controls.
